Nestled at an altitude of 250 meters on the southern slopes of the Pollino Massif, Cassano all’Ionio is one of Calabria’s most fascinating tourist destinations. Located close to the Sibari Plain, this town offers a perfect blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and cultural attractions.
Cassano all’Ionio is inextricably linked to its hamlet of Sibari, the ancient site of the wealthy Achaean colony of Sybaris, famous for its luxury and destroyed by the Crotoniates in 510 BC. Today, the Archaeological Park of Sybaris offers a journey through the civilizations that inhabited this land, with remains of the cities of Thurii and Copia superimposed on the original colony. The park covers 168 hectares, offering a wide range of artifacts, including the Roman quarter and the remains of ancient streets and theaters.
