Oriolo

Oriolo, a medieval jewel in the heart of Pollino

Nestled at the foot of its majestic castle, Oriolo is an elegant village that seems suspended in time, between the slopes of Pollino National Park and the hills that gently descend toward the Ionian Sea. Located in the province of Cosenza, at approximately 450 meters above sea level on a rocky spur, this municipality of about 1,800 inhabitants is an authentic treasure trove of Calabrian history, art, and traditions. Recognized among “The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy” and awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, Oriolo represents an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic slow tourism experience, far from the frenzy of modern life.

The name Oriolo derives from the Latin “hordeolus,” meaning “barley grain,” testifying to the agricultural vocation of the territory. The origins of the village date back to the Byzantine era, when it was built as a defensive fortress to protect coastal populations from continuous Saracen raids.

As early as the year 1000, Oriolo was considered a “civitas” and notarial seat, as evidenced by period documents. In 1068, a papal bull by Pope Alexander II confirmed the importance of the village, which was listed among the principal cities of the metropolitan see.

The Medieval Castle

The undisputed symbol of the village, the Castle of Oriolo was erected by the Sanseverino family and preserves its original structure intact, characterized by two guard towers and the central keep. Recently restored, the castle is open to visitors and hosts cultural events and exhibitions.

Originally, the castle had four corner towers, two of which collapsed at the beginning of the last century. The seventeenth-century frescoes decorating the halls testify to the artistic importance of the manor.
